Dogwood Festival Amateur Photo Contest This year's Dogwood Festival Amateur Photo Contest will be on display at the Orleans Christian Church Unity Hall for three days of the festival. The Unity Hall will be open for the display during the festival Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Deadline for entries will be , May 1st , 2012 and photos may be dropped off at the office of the Progress Examiner. They will be picked up from the Progress office in late afternoon on that day. There will be four categories for entrants to choose from - people, animals, nature and miscellaneous. Black & white and color in these categories; and entrants will need to choose in which category they want their photo judged. All photos must be no smaller than a 5x7 and must be framed or matted. Due to the large size of the frames of last year's entries, photographers are asked not submit photos that are both framed and matted. This poses problems with displaying the photos. Entries should include the name and telephone number of the photographer, as well as the category of choice for judging. This can be done with a sticky note on the back of the frame or matte. Professional photographers should not enter; if a photo entered is deemed to have been taken by a professional, it will be for display only. Please limit entries to no more than 3 per person. Submissions should be limited to photographs taken by the entrants. You should not submit a photo unless you are the photographer. Out-of-town judges will rate the photos based on several attributes. First and second place will be given in each category, and the People's Choice award can be voted on at the display. New last year was the “Where in Orleans...was this photo taken?”. This contest will be back again for 2012 and you will have a chance to win prizes if you can correctly identify where the photos were taken. Please direct all ideas or questions to contest chair Becky Padgett. You can contact her at 865-3948 or by e-mail at
